It is one of those walks that makes me grateful to live here and at peace with the world! It is round Leisure Island, through Steenbok Park and on the beach and should take about 1hour 30mins. It is a great walk if you have a dog or not and all on the flat so easy going.
The key criteria for the best walk is a low tide as it means you can walk round most the Island on the beach and in a morning the beach is quiet and the dogs have a great time. If you start at Steenbok Park you get a chance to meet many of the other dog walkers and do a bit of socialising, it also means you finish near the Leisure Island Cafe for breakfast, brunch or lunch.
So my directions for a great walk:
- Coming on to the island turn immediately right and follow road round till you get to Steenbok Park on the right. If you park at the second entrance you are only about 100m from the Cafe which will be on your left.
- Enter the park and check the map just after you go in, you are going to walk through the park to Rodgers Way and on to Kingfisher Creek. So head off through the Park on any path, it is a dog heaven and has some lovely indigenous plants.
- Get to the end where the Boat Club is and follow the path between the Boat Club and the bowling green, this is Rodgers Way.
- At the end of Rodgers Way go straight on to the flood area of Kingfisher Creek, this floods at high tide so if the tide is too high, turn left and walk round on the road to the right which will take you to Bollards Beach.
- Going through the trees at the end you get to the beach and then it is simply a case of following that round the Island until you get to the causeway when you will have to head back on to the road for the last little bit to the car and Cafe.
Note that the Park and the Beaches all require you to keep Dogs on a lead or you will be fined but most people do not and have not had any issues. Do however pick up after your dog so everyone can enjoy the scenery.
