The bunting flags blew, the Mitchell’s beer tent went up and the visitors to Leisure Island streamed in. Time for the annual Leisure Island Festival which had a great atmosphere, as usual, and raised money for some worthy causes (I believe it is second only to the Oyster Festival for the money it raises).
I know it seems early but I was looking for some nice but different things for Christmas. I found some lovely Christmas decorations made of wire and wool on the “fresh start” stall which supports local children to break out of poverty by encouraging them to collect recycling material. I confess I also cheated and brought a Christmas cake from a lovely local lady who had a stand just selling her Christmas cakes. There is also a huge book stall run by the local Hospice, a large plant sale run by Gardening for Leisure and dozens of craft and food stalls.
Finally I have to mention with pride that my, nine month old puppy, Pippin won 2nd prize in “Cutest Puppy” class at the KAWS dog walk. We were piped to the post by a young and fluffy Husky but Pippin loved all the attention, he certainly knows how to work the crowd!
That is what makes the Leisure Island Festival special; it supports local people and is attended by charities, clubs, local business and individuals all trying to do their bit. I am inspired by what people can do and it helped me ease into Christmas planning so a good weekend all-in-all and one I would definitely recommend to visitors.
